ABOUT US
THE GREEN PARTY
In existence only since 1972, the Green Party has grown from humble beginnings in three countries to a global movement spanning more than 80 countries on every continent. The Green Party of California, founded in 1990, is an integral part of that movement. The Green Party has active organizations in all of California's large metropolitan areas, and in over 30 of 56 counties. Party registration has passed 110,000 for the first time since the party's qualification for the ballot in January 1992. California Greens have won 51 elections, including 24 for city council and one for state assembly. The Green Party of California hosted the first-ever national Green Party presidential nomination convention in 1996 at UCLA.
Nationwide, Greens have been organizing local groups since 1984. The first state Green parties formed in 1990, and today there are 30 states with Green Parties and 15 others with local Green groups. Ninety-two Greens held elected office in 21 states as of July 2001. The Green Party's 1996 presidential ticket of Ralph Nader and Winona LaDuke finished fourth, and finished third in 2000. On the national level, the Green Party of California is affiliated with Association of State Green Parties. On July 27, 2001 the ASGP voted to form the Green Party of the United States and to file with the Federal Election Commission for recognition as the National Committee of the Green Party. Initial reaction from the FEC has been positive and we expect a response from the FEC by early October. On the international level, the ASGP is a member of the Federation of the Green Parties of the Americas, and is a formal diplomatic partner with the European Federation of Green Parties. On the global level, the first planetary Green Party meeting was in Brazil in 1992, and the second was in Australia in April 2001.
The first Green Parties were formed in 1972-73, in Tasmania, New Zealand and Great Britain. Today they exist in Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, Russia, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Thousands of Greens are elected at municipal and state levels. Over 200 Greens are elected to national parliaments in a dozen Western and European countries, as well as the Australian Senate, the Brazilian Congress, the European Parliament, and the Mexican House of Deputies. Greens are or have been part of the national ruling coalitions in Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, and Italy.
